This year marks the 350th anniversary of the Esnoga. Consider making a donation to our photo exhibition project, to make this year extra special.<\/p>

Photographer Marte Visser has been documenting the lively Portuguese Jewish community for quite some years now. In her most recent photo series – all made with natural light- she catches the unique atmosphere of our rites and celebrations.<\/p>

What is it that keeps fascinating this dedicated photographer about the monumental synagogue? ‘It simply is always beautiful here’, says Marte, ‘ all you need to do is follow the light, that moves slowly.’<\/p>

The Esnoga, or Snoge<\/em>, as it is lovingly called by insiders, celebrates its 350th anniversary in 2025 (5785-5786).<\/p>

To mark this occasion, a small photo exhibit is already open to the public. This is just a taste of a much bigger exhibition that is planned for the spring of 2026. It will be the first exhibition ever in this historical building.<\/p>

We look forward to welcoming you next spring in Snoge to admire the breathtaking work of Marte Visser: it captures the life of our Amsterdam Portuguese Jewish community in a very special way.<\/p>
