The Hazan leads the service from the\u00a0<em>teba<\/em>, which is placed near the entrance and opposite the Holy Ark\u00a0<em>(hechal)<\/em>. The\u00a0<em>teba<\/em>\u00a0is surrounded by a balustrade. Its copper knobs are used to hold the Tora mantles.<\/p><p>During the High Holidays the so-called\u00a0<em>hatanim sofas<\/em>\u00a0are placed in front of the Hechal. During Simchat Torah the sofas are used to seat the\u00a0<em>Hatan Tora<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Hatan Beresit<\/em>.<\/p><p>Nothing changes in the Esnoga. Sand still covers the floor to soften the sound of footsteps, there is no central heating and the synagogue is lit by the copper chandeliers\u2019 hundreds of candles.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-14ea6bb\" data-id=\"14ea6bb\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8102e6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8102e6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Chazzanut<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-665f9be elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"665f9be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeInLeft&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The specific Spanish\/Portuguese tradition is taken from Oeb Brandon\u2019s\u00a0<em>Seder Hazanut<\/em>\u00a0from 1892. In the 1940s Hazan Bram Lopes Cardozo annotated his own personal copy in New York. Hazan S. Nowadays, they wear top hats. The\u00a0<em>tokeang<\/em>\u00a0(the shofar blower) still wears a three-cornered hat on Rosh Hashana.<\/p><p>Parnassim wear a high hat to synagogue. Up until the 1980s they wore tails on Kal Nidre and Simhat Torah and a morning coat on holidays.\u00a0<em>Officiantes<\/em> and <em>misvoteiros<\/em>\u00a0used to wear a high hat on holidays, as did some\u00a0<em>snogeiros<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-471302c\" data-id=\"471302c\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-392fe0b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"392fe0b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Portuguese manners\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef400f2 elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ef400f2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeInLeft&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Portuguese used to display a type of behavior that can best be described as\u00a0<em>gravidade<\/em>. Portuguese don\u2019t walk, they stride. They will not display exuberant or common behavior. A number of customs are still alive and well in our synagogue: to walk in procession, bowing to each other and wishing someone\u00a0<em>Hazak Baruch<\/em>\u00a0with a wave of a hand.<\/p><p>The atmosphere in our synagogue is in part determined by the speed of reading. Sefardim read slowly. In the past it was even considered elongated. Snogeiros do not monitor each other\u2019s behavior and are respectful of each other\u2019s private life. This is conducive to our open and tolerant approach of which we are proud. Whether orthodox or liberal, every Jew is welcome and can play a part in our community.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Portuguese community holds its age-old traditions and customs dear.
