Photographer Marte Visser has been documenting the lively Portuguese Jewish community for quite some years now. In her most recent photo series – all made with natural light- she catches the unique atmosphere of our rites and celebrations.
What is it that keeps fascinating this dedicated photographer about the monumental synagogue? ‘It simply is always beautiful here’, says Marte, ‘ all you need to do is follow the light, that moves slowly.’
The Esnoga, or Snoge, as it is lovingly called by insiders, celebrates its 350th anniversary in 2025 (5785-5786).
To mark this occasion, a small photo exhibit is already open to the public. This is just a taste of a much bigger exhibition that is planned for the spring of 2026. It will be the first exhibition ever in this historical building.
We look forward to welcoming you next spring in Snoge to admire the breathtaking work of Marte Visser: it captures the life of our Amsterdam Portuguese Jewish community in a very special way.
